Mounsey End Woods

A perfect location for walking and bird watching

As our guest, you will have direct access to our hundred and forty acre ancient woodland nature reserve below the cottage. It has extensive walks with nearly two miles of river bank, and a magical Iron Age hill fort to explore. There is plenty of wildlife to spot from red deer to otters, rare butterflies to buzzards. Records of your sightings are always gratefully received.

Being situated in the middle of Exmoor makes Mounsey End an ideal base for visiting the attractions of North Devon, its coastal towns and beeches, and Somerset with its historic sites and cities, unique wetlands landscape and habitats, as well arts, crafts and excellent cream teas.

There are walking maps and guides provided in the cottage. The family has had links with the area since the 1850s and can provide special interest information for keen gardeners, beachcombers, cyclists, kite flyers, artists, riders etc.

Table tennis is available by arrangement in the outbuildings and fishing can be arranged on the river below the cottage.

The small and unspoilt market town of Dulverton is 10 minutes away with special shops for just about every need. It has a local butcher, more than one tearoom, 2 pubs, 2 quality restaurants, a cornucopia of a second hand book shop, a friendly and helpful tourist information centre and many other unique and independent shops to browse in. The local Co-op supermarket is open from 6am to 11pm everyday, including Sundays and most Bank Holidays.

The famous ancient clapper bridge, Tarr Steps, is 2 miles (a short car journey or delightful river walk) from the cottage. Also close by are the pretty villages of Winsford and Withypool each with its own excellent pub (both called The Royal Oak !)

Nearby are the National Trust’s superb house and garden at Knightshayes, the castle at Dunster and the nationally important Horner Woods below the majestic and ancient beacon at Dunkery.

Porlock is our closest point on the coast and is a stunningly beautiful 20 minute drive away, across some of the best of the moorland scenery.
